The human head is formed from the bony structures of the skull and the embedded sense organs eyes, nose, mouth and ears as well as the brain inside. Tendons, ligaments, muscles, cartilage, connective tissue and the skin form the outer structures. The front of the head is the face, which in turn can be roughly divided into the forehead, eyes, nose, mouth, cheek and chin area. The temples are in the front lateral head area. From the ear, the side of the head as well as the back of the head and the top of the head are covered by hair on the head when the hair is healthy.

Essential functions of sensory perception and the central nervous system are concentrated on the head area. Seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing and all conscious and subconscious thinking go back to the organs of the head. The sense of balance is also controlled from here - more precisely from the ear. If the structures in the head area are damaged, this can have far-reaching consequences. This applies both to acute injuries such as a fracture of the base of the skull due to an accident, as well as to various brain diseases (e.g. brain tumors, meningitis) and the other sensory organs (e.g. acute otitis media, eye infection or sinus infection).

The spectrum of possible symptoms in the head area is extremely variable and ranges from classic headaches to earaches, runny nose or toothache to dizziness and unusual diseases such as cluster headaches. Impairments of sensory perception such as hearing loss or visual disturbances can also be attributed to the head area in the broader sense. In addition, psychological complaints are often equated with head problems in common usage. Overall, many structures in the head area are particularly sensitive and impairment of their functions have extremely far-reaching, fatal consequences in the worst case. (fp)
